MINISTRY OF FISHERIES AND OCEAN RESOURCES

Marine Ecosystems Research Program

The Marine Ecosystems Research Programme focuses on advancing knowledge of the marine environment, with particular emphasis on Endangered, Threatened, and Protected (ETP) species, as well as other ecologically significant marine life. Building on the ETP research previously undertaken within the Fisheries Research Programme, this Programme now supports a broader ecological and environmental scope, aligned with national policy priorities and international commitments, including the government’s environmental pledges.

The Programme is structured around two key areas of research:  coral reef ecosystems, and species of key ecological importance. Research activities aim to improve understanding of ecosystem dynamics, environmental health, and the impacts of climate change and other stressors on marine ecosystems. This work is critical for informing conservation strategies, guiding management interventions, and supporting the resilience of marine ecosystems in the face of ongoing environmental change.
