The Fisheries Research Programme is currently focused on conducting comprehensive research on the country’s key fisheries and the species targeted by these sectors. This work is aligned with national priorities as well as international reporting requirements and obligations. Core activities include routine data collection on actively exploited species, along with targeted studies on underutilized or potential fishery resources that may support future development

The Programme plays a critical role in assessing fishing pressure and the status of marine resources to provide timely, science-based advice for the sustainable management of various fisheries.

In close collaboration with the Ecosystem Research group, the Programme also integrates reef-based fisheries research with ecosystem-level studies. This includes examining the role of fishing within coral reef systems and assessing the broader impacts of fishing practices on reef health and ecosystem function. This cross-program coordination ensures that fisheries research supports both resource sustainability and ecosystem resilience.
